Cheap Meal Ideas with Canned Tuna

Cheap Meal Ideas with Canned Tuna

I'm not much of a seafood person. I don't eat a lot of fish, but how handy is canned tuna? I always keep a few cans in the pantry for simple meals when I open the fridge and there's nothing staring back at me.

A large can of Tuna is around $6, and if you're clever enough that's enough for dinner for the whole family!

Tuna Patties

I grew up on these as a regular rotation in our house, when money was tight, and I still really enjoy them. Serve them with homemade chips and salad, or as a burger.

This recipe is really similar to my mums (which isn't written down anywhere), in that is uses potato, which gives the a really nice texture, and bulks them out a bit.

Tuna Melts

Why does it seem like a hot food is more of a meal than cold food? Turn that tuna sandwich from just a sandwich into a main meal. Here's a bougie recipe, but mayo, tuna and cheese works pretty well too!

Tuna Pasta

There's endless recipes, so find your favourite flavour and go for it.... spicy, tomato, creamy....

Tuna Sushi

The initial ingredients for sushi can seem a bit expensive (nori and vinegar) but they go a reeaaally long way, and if your whānau loves sushi, it's so much cheaper than buying it. Makes for great lunchbox food too!
